Inaugural Showcase Tied to WPSL Championship in Norman, Oklahoma in July
Oklahoma City – The Women’s Premier Soccer League will host its first International Combine in conjunction with the 2018 WPSL Championship in Norman, Oklahoma on July 20-22, the league announced Wednesday.
Andy Vera, director of soccer operation for WPSL club Old Dominion Cesena USA, will serve as the direct liaison and has been named International Programs and Combine Manager.
Coaches from the Italian Football Federation will assist with the combine’s technical aspects. The WPSL has contacted a number of top-level European professional clubs that have expressed their intentions to attend.
“In my communications with international clubs, the WPSL is well recognized as a leader in women’s football,” Vera said. “The international combine will showcase the league’s talent to the world and open new and exciting pathways for our athletes.”
In addition to field sessions and scrimmages, the combine will provide classroom sessions with a variety of topics including video analysis and education on playing professionally overseas.
The combine will be capped at 200 athletes.
The league’s four regional champions will meet in Norman for the 2018 WPSL Championship. The semifinal matches will take place on July 20 with the final on July 22. Fire and Ice SC (St. Louis) are the defending champions.
We are excited for the chance to host some of the nations top talent,” said Don Rother, Oklahoma Celtic executive director. “It will be a fantastic opportunity for our players and surrounding area players to experience this level of play. We look forward to continuing a working relationship with the WPSL.”
