The First Match of the Season Will Kick-Off on May 14th

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Women’s Premier Soccer League has announced the schedule for the Southern Division of the Carolinas Conference today for the upcoming 2021 season. As a result of the league’s largest expansion-team class since the 2017 season and the goal to reduce travel concerns, the Carolinas Conference has been divided into three divisions – the only such conference with more than two divisions this season.

The Southern Division be represented by Asheville City SC, Charlotte Eagles, Independence Central (Charlotte), SC United Bantams (Columbia), and Women’s Football Club of Charlotte.

The 2019 season was the Charlotte Eagles’ first season in the WPSL, in which they finished with a 7-0-1 record while going undefeated at home and earning the regular-season conference title. In doing so, the Eagles secured a playoff spot and made it to the South Regional Finals.

Asheville and Independence Central both return for their third seasons. Asheville finished second in their previous two seasons and has accumulated a 12-5-1 overall record while outscoring opponents 56/17. Formerly known as the Carolina Rapids, Independence Central has also seen success in their previous two seasons by producing an overall 11-4-2 record. During their first season in 2018, Independence Central captured the Carolinas Conference’s regular-season title with a 9-1-0 finish.

The Southern Division will feature two new teams to the league, WFC of Charlotte – who joined as a 2021 expansion team, and SC United Bantams – who joined in 2020 but were unable to play their inaugural season due to the season cancellation from COVID-19.

“We are all very excited to be part of the WPSL,” Scott Ginn, president and CEO of WFC, said. “It will be an honor to serve the players of the Charlotte community and help them achieve their goals.”

The season will kick off on May 14th and play a 20-match schedule through July 11 with each team play four matches home and away.

The first match of the schedule will feature Independence Central hosting the Charlotte Eagles.
