OKLAHOMA CITY (February 21, 2022) – The Women’s Premier Soccer League announced today, Florida Roots Futbol Club and the league have mutually agreed to postpone the club’s inaugural season to 2023 in an effort to restructure the league’s Gulf Coast footprint.
With its long-standing efforts of promoting soccer at all levels in Panama City (Fla.) and surrounding areas, Florida Roots Futbol Club will play a pivotal part in rebuilding the league’s Gulf Conference and reinforcing the WPSL’s presence along the Florida panhandle.
The Gulf Conference has experienced paramount obstacles in recent seasons, between the aftermath of Hurricane Michael in 2018, the strongest hurricane on record to make landfall in the Florida Panhandle, and the devasting effects from the COVID-19 pandemic that ceased soccer operations league-wide in 2020.
Similarly, the Northwest Conference also experienced obstacles returning to play after the pandemic, ultimately causing it to sit out the 2021 season as well. With the unveiling of the 2022 Roster of Teams and Alignment, announced on Feb. 4, the WPSL confirmed the Northwest Conference would return, however, the Gulf would sit out another season.
With the recent alignment unveiling, the WPSL confirmed an all-time high of 137 teams. The league’s 24th season of play opens May 6 and the regular season concludes July 10. The 16 conference champions advance to the WPSL Playoffs and compete in a single-elimination format culminating with the 2022 WPSL champion crowned the weekend of July 22-24 in Stillwater, Okla. on the campus of Oklahoma State University.
