FC Milwaukee Torrent opened its 2022 season with a bang, securing all six points from its two matches over Memorial Day Weekend.

The winning began when Torrent secured the 3-0 victory over neighbors Bavarian United SC at Hart Park in Wauwatosa Friday evening.

Bavarian United controlled the run of play in the first  20 minutes of the match, utilizing counter-attacking opportunities to make a break toward its attacking third. Despite multiple on-target efforts, Bavarian United was unable to find the back of the net.

The hosts finally broke through in the 22’ minute when Senya Meurer played a ball over the top of the Bavarian defense that found Haley Johnson at the edge of the penalty area. Johnson took a dribble and fired a shot across goal to make it 1-0 Torrent, which it would remain through halftime.

Torrent broke through again in the 49’ minute after the referee played advantage. Elsi Twombly had the ball played to her around the penalty spot, where she turned to her right and fired on goal to make it 2-0. Twombly then put the match away in the 69’ minute, with Katie Swenson securing the assist to make it a 3-0 victory to open the 2022 season.

“A derby is always different circumstances, but we came out very disciplined, very disciplined,” Andreas Davi, FC Milwaukee Torrent head coach, said. “We had only three days before that game with the whole roster together... I think it was a well-deserved game from the technical discipline with the match-plan that we had. The players completely performed how I expected them to.”

The second match of the weekend for Torrent required a bit more work, though it resulted in another three points at home.

Torrent’s Twombly continued her goal-scoring weekend as she scored both goals – including a 93’ minute game-winner – in the 2-1 victory over league newcomers Midwest Select SA Muskrats at Hart Park.

It was the visitors who struck first in the 17’ minute when a corner kick was played into the middle of the penalty area and found the head of Kaylee Evers who turned it toward the far post to score the Muskrats’ first-ever goal, giving it the early 1-0 advantage.

Despite the early lead, the Muskrats were unable to keep the sheet clean through the first half. After the ball was played into the penalty area, no Midwest defender was able to clear it before the ball fell to Twombly, whose effort was rocketed into the back of the net to level the match at 1-1 in the 39’ minute.

After a back and forth second half, Torrent stole the victory in stoppage time. On a set piece from just outside the penalty area, Torrent struck into a mass of humanity in front of the Muskrats’ net before the ball trickled in to secure the victory.

“It was a lucky situation, however, I’m the kind of guy who believes that you earn your luck,” Davi said. “Our team earned that luck.”

Torrent now sits comfortably at the top of the Lake Michigan Division standings with six points. Its next match will have the leaders travel as it takes on the Muskrats again on June 10 before hosting Chicago KICS on June 12
