RECAP: WEEK 5 IN THE MIDWEST CONFERENCE

Chicago KICS FC 1-0 Midwest Select SA Muskrats

Chicago KICS and Midwest Select SA Muskrats met for the second time of the WPSL season, with Chicago claiming its second consecutive victory over its rivals from Indiana with a 1-0 win at the De La Salle Institute.


Chicago got the lead in the first half after a continued run of possession. A cross came in from the right side in the 27th minute and after the initial shot was saved, Chicago’s Josie Bieda tapped in the rebound to give her side the 1-0 lead at home.


Both teams had chances in the second half, but neither were able to score – giving Chicago KICS its second win of the season.

 

FC Milwaukee Torrent 6-0 Quad Cities Rush

FC Milwaukee Torrent continued its dominant start to the 2023 season while taking down Quad Cities Rush 6-0 at Hart Park in Wisconsin.


Milwaukee managed to take a 3-0 lead after only 24 minutes with goals from Elsi Twombly, Layla Kelbel, and Lola Wojcik, respectively. The home side made it 4-0 in the 36th minute after a Lainey Higgins goal, which was the scoreline at halftime.


Twombly scored her second goal of the evening to give her side the 5-0 lead before the final score was secured by Lainey Higgins, also claiming her second goal of the evening to make it 6-0.


Higgins, Mia Haertle & Maddie Celarek each collected an assist for Milwaukee.


FC Milwaukee Torrent have now outscored its opponents 19-0 over three matches.



FC Dayton 5-0 Dayton Dutch Lions FC

FC Dayton dominated local rivals Dayton Dutch Lions 5-0 en route to its third victory of the WPSL season.


Dara Russo collected a brace early on to give FC Dayton the 2-0 lead. Diana Benigno then managed to create a goal of her own to give the home side the 3-0 lead.


Kylee Simmons and Lauren Bastian each scored for FC Dayton to secure its side’s 5-0 win.

FC Spirit 0-3 FC Pride

FC Pride managed its third win of the season, and second over FC Spirit, after a 3-0 performance on the road.


Madison Swingle opened the scoring for FC Pride, who had only scored a single goal in the previous two league matches. Addy Joiner and Paige Miller joined in on the goal scoring and secured their side’s 3-0 win in Evansville.

Quad Cities Rush 1-1 Midwest Select SA Muskrats

Quad Cities Rush and Midwest Select SA Muskrats played to a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon at the St. Vincent Sports Complex.


Abigail Glackin put her side up 1-0 before halftime when she knocked in a lovely goal that was assisted by Ellie Whiteman.


The first-half goal wasn’t enough for the hosts to clinch the victory as Midwest Select’s Stephanie Perretta scored in the second half to secure a share of the points for her side.

 

FC Spirit 2-5 FC Dayton

FC Dayton continued its goal-scoring bonanza of a weekend when it traveled to Evansville, Indiana, defeating FC Spirit 5-2.


Dara Russo managed a hat trick against FC Spirit, bringing her weekend total to five goals overall. Kylee Simmons and Jenna Hallbeck were the two other goal scorers for FC Dayton while Hallbeck, Lauren Bastian, and Alaina Huber tallied assists.


Kennedy Neighbors and Claudia Melgar scored the two goals for FC Spirit.

 

Chicago KICS 2-3 Iowa Raptors FC

Iowa Raptors FC made the trip to Chicago worthwhile, securing its second win of the season after a 3-2 victory over Chicago KICS FC.


Iowa took the lead in the 15th minute when Jessica Reinhardt found Hallie Peak in the middle of the pitch with space and Hess buried her shot into the back of the net to make it 1-0. Chicago managed to equalize less than two minutes later when Josie Bieda scored to make it 1-1 in the 17th minute.


The match remained even for about ten minutes before Iowa took over. First, Alexis Vasquez connected with Reinhardt for a goal to make it 2-1 in the 26th minute. That wasn’t enough for Iowa as they scored again in the 27th minute, this time it was Reegan Hess and assisted by Eliza Evans.


Iowa took a 3-1 lead into halftime before Chicago’s Karli Ferguson scored a consolation goal in the 51st minute that gave the match its 3-2 final scoreline.
