Team Boca Blast welcomed nearby neighbors FC Surge to Patch Reef Park on Wednesday night. In their previous meeting of the season, the teams ended deadlocked at 2-2 and shared a point each. On Wednesday night, in a game lasting for nearly four hours due to a lightning delay, Team Boca Blast came away with a vital 3-1 win that propelled it to the top of the Coconut Division Standings.
The match was back and forth like the previous meeting between the two sides from the start, but Team Boca Blast’s Eliana Salama (Southern Methodist University) scored a wonderful goal in the 18’ minute, assisted by Marykate McGuire (Ole Miss), from outside the box to open the scoring 1-0 on the evening.
The two teams continued to create chances back and forth before Thelma Hermannsdottir (Florida Atlantic University) scored in the 40’ minute of play to put the home team up 2-0 with an assist from Jordan Schaefer (Stetson University).
A few minutes later, the game was stopped due to lightning in the area. The delay lasted for over an hour before the teams took the field for the final minutes of the first half.
After a shortened halftime, FC Surge fought back into the match with a perfect through ball from Miriam Shomstein (Sacred Heart University) to Christina Gratz (East Carolina graduate), who put the ball in the net in the 55’ minute.
However, McGuire finished the game off in the 78’ minute after capitalizing on another great pass from Schaefer to give Boca Blast the 3-1 win. Despite the effort from FC Surge, Boca Blast held on to the two-goal advantage.
This victory put Boca Blast atop the division standings with 14 points (4-1-2) over second-place FC Prime (4-0-0) with 12 points, which still has three games in hand. Team Boca Blast will play its next and final match of the regular season against FC Prime on June 28. This match could prove to have a big impact on the final standings of the division.
FC Surge will return home to host the Florida Gulf Coast Dutch Lions FC on June 25 as the team looks to get back on track after two losses. In addition, FC Surge also has a game to reschedule that was canceled due to weather against FC Prime.
