DETROIT EXPANSION BUILT ON A HISTORIC COMMITMENT TO
THE WOMEN’S GAME PREPARES FOR FIRST WPSL SEASON

DETROIT (Jan. 9, 2024) – The Women’s Premier Soccer League officially names Corktown WFC as an expansion side for this season’s Roster of Teams. With the announcement, the League restores its reach in the state of Michigan.

“We are always looking to challenge ourselves [and] playing in the WPSL is an excellent opportunity to compete in what I believe is the best women’s league in the country,” Aaron Roy, Corktown WFC owner and general manager, said.

“The WPSL has carried the torch for women’s soccer for over 25 years and we can’t imagine a better place for our women-centric club to be.”

Corktown WFC was formed as a women-centric club in 2022, on the 50th anniversary of Title IX, in the Corktown neighborhood of Detroit – the oldest neighborhood in the city (1834).  The club began play in the summer of 2023 while competing in three local competitions, the Women’s Super League, Michigan Premier League, and the Premier League Cup, where it went on to a 17-1-1 record while outscoring opponents 66/14 and earning accolades including, Coach and Player of the Year, Golden Boot, and Golden Glove honors – Corktown earned championships in all three.

For the 2024 season, Roy will also serve as head coach and lead Corktown WFC in its first WPSL campaign. Roy holds over two decades of coaching experience before entering the women’s game eight years ago as an assistant coach and since held head positions over the last four years where he’s accumulated a 43-4-5 overall record. Roy is a U.S. Soccer Federation B License candidate and holds coaching diplomas from United Soccer Coaches and the Football Association in England.

“All of our energy, effort, and resources at Corktown WFC are focused on our female athletes and promoting/advancing the women’s game in Metro Detroit,” Roy said.

“It was our mission to compete in a nationwide league focused solely on women’s soccer and the WPSL has always been just that. It’s a perfect fit for our women-centric club.”
