McLEAN SOCCER KICKS OFF WPSL DEBUT THIS SUMMER

McLEAN, Va. (March 15, 2024) – The Women’s Premier Soccer League welcomes McLean Soccer to the league for the 2024 season.

“We are thrilled to announce our club’s entry into the prestigious WPSL, the longest-active women’s soccer league in the U.S.,” Louise Waxler, McLean Soccer executive director, said.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for our players to showcase their talent and compete against some of the best teams in the country. We acknowledge the late Jerry Zanelli for his vision to create a women’s league 25 years ago, providing a platform for the women’s game.”

McLean Soccer is part of the McLean Youth Soccer Association, which is widely recognized as one of the premier youth soccer clubs in the Washington D.C. Metro area. Since its founding in the early 1970s, the club has remained steadfast in its mission of providing opportunities for all players to reach their full potential in soccer.

During its long history, McLean Soccer has placed hundreds of its players in the college and professional ranks. On average, the club sees 20 to 25 players commit to collegiate soccer every year – approximately half of those yearly commitments are to Power Five conferences. The club is also well represented in the professional ranks in the U.S. and abroad while working closely with U.S. Soccer and other federations in helping identify potential youth national team players. To date, 10 McLean Soccer players have represented the U.S., Columbia, and Jamaica at the international youth level.

McLean Soccer’s inaugural WPSL campaign will be in the Atlantic Conference’s five-team The District Division that will consist of an eight-game home-and-away schedule versus teams from Alexandria, Arlington, Richmond, and The District of Columbia. The District Division winner will travel to face the Carolinas Division winner for the Atlantic Conference Championship, with the winner advancing to the South Region playoffs hosted by this year’s Lone Star Conference winner.

Nadir Moumen will lead McLean Soccer in its first WPSL season as head coach. Moumen is one of the most decorated coaches in the area and was named United Soccer Coaches National Youth Coach of the Year in 2018. Moumen will be assisted by Clyde Watson, who served as assistant coach of the Washington Warthogs (indoor), head coach of the University of the District of Columbia, and as assistant coach of the Washington Freedom (WUSA,WPS) from 2001-2010.
