CENTRAL REGION RANKINGS - WEEK 3

Published May 29, 2024

The cream is starting to rise to the crop with all but one of the Central Region’s Top 10 teams—FC Milwaukee Torrent—having kicked off the season. FC Dayton moves into the top spot in the Region, up from No. 12 last week, thanks to two convincing wins on the road. The Utah Avalanche rebounded from its first WPSL loss in Week 2, earning two wins to vault to No. 2. The Colorado Pride and Union KC both return to the Top 10 after falling off from Preseason Rankings.

1. FC DAYTON (3-0-0)

   Midwest Conference — Gateway Division

   Week 2 Rank: 4th

Two road wins: 6-1 at F.C. Spirit and 4-0 at Dayton Dutch Lions FC thrust FC Dayton to the top of the Central Region heap. Peyton Kohls leads the Gateway Division with four goals, followed by Dani Hicks with three goals on the season. FC Dayton returns home for a doubleheader June 1 versus F.C. Spirit (0-2-0) and FC Pride (0-0-1) June 2 in the Central Region Match of the Week.

2. UTAH AVALANCHE (3-1-0)

   Mountain Conference — Wasatch Division

   Week 2 Rank: 8th

A pair of wins helped wash the bitter taste of its first ever WPSL defeat out of its mouth: 3-1 at home over expansion side Northern Utah United, and 6-0 at Griffins FC, thanks to a hattrick from Collette Jepson Smith in her first appearance for the club in 2024. Seven Castain leads the Wasatch Division with five goals so far. The Avalanche travel to face Northern Utah United (1-0-2) Friday, May 31.

3. SALVO SC (1-0-0)

   Northern Conference

   Week 2 Rank: 3rd

Salvo opened the season characteristically, cruising past Joy AC 5-1 to open the season. It took Khyah Harper just 22 minutes to pick up her first hattrick of the season. Harper’s three goals put her at the top of the Northern Conference goalscoring list. Salvo does not play again until a Week 5 three-game homestand starting on June 5 versus the Minnesota Thunder.

4. KC COURAGE (2-0-0)

   Heartland Conference

   Week 2 Rank: 2nd

A 2-1 home win over FC Wichita was not enough to keep KC Courage in the No. 2 spot it held last week. After going down a goal, Courtney Claassen scored from the penalty spot to pull the game level, and Aya Saiki tallied the winner in the second half. The Courage travel to FC Wichita (0-1-0) on Saturday, June 1 for the return match.

5. MINNESOTA THUNDER (1-0-0)

   Northern Conference

   Week 2 Rank: 5th

The Minnesota Thunder held steady at No. 2 after a 2-0 home win versus Joy AC to open its schedule. Kaitlyn MacBean had both goals for the Thunder in the win. The Thunder travels to Mankato United Soccer Club (0-0-0) on Friday, May 31.

6. COLORADO PRIDE (1-0-0)

   Mountain Conference — Rockies Division

   Week 2 Rank: Unranked

With the Rockies Division ripe for the taking, the Colorado Pride made a statement in its opening match, blowing out expansion side Colorado Blizzard FC 13-0. Nigerian Youth International Bello tallied five times, Abby Stassi, Juliana Kottbauer, and Megan Davis each scored twice each, and Ava Amsden and Sydney Burskey added goals in the win. The Pride is back in action Sunday, June 2 at home versus Indios Denver FC.

7. LA ROCA FC (2-0-0)

   Mountain Conference — Wasatch Division

   Week 2 Rank: 7th

A dramatic, two-goal comeback win over then-top-ranked Utah Surf keeps La Roca at No.7. After going down by two goals, Sophie White tallied her first of two goals on the night. She leveled the score in the 69th minute. Kalea Woodyatt scored the go-ahead goal with five minutes to play to give La Roca the victory. La Roca FC hosts Northern Utah United (1-0-2) Saturday June 1.

8. UTAH SURF (1-1-0)

   Mountain Conference — Wasatch Division

   Week 2 Rank: 1st

After a week at the top spot, the Utah Surf sits in the bottom half of the table after a dramatic 3-2 loss to 7th ranked La Roca FC. The Surf look to rebound with a two-game homestand starting, Friday, May 31 versus Griffins FC (2-2-0) and Saturday, June 1 versus the Utah Red Devils (0-0-3).

9. FC MILWAUKEE TORRENT (0-0-0)

Midwest Conference — Lake Michigan Division

   Week 2 Rank: 6th

The only team in the Central Top 10 yet to play, FC Milwaukee Torrent went an impressive 7-1-0 to win the Midwest Conference title in 2023. Milwaukee kicks off its 2024 schedule June 2 versus Green Bay Glory (0-0-0).

10. UNION KC (1-0-0)

    Heartland Conference

    Week 2 Rank: Unranked

Union KC climbed back into the Central Top 10 from a hard-fought 2-1 road win at Sunflower State FC. Kate Gibson pulled the visitors level in the 59’ minute and Lily Hollis earned the lead with just eight minutes to play. Union KC enters a two-game homestand in Week 4 starting Thursday, May 30 versus Missouri Reign (0-2-0), and Saturday, June 1 versus Oklahoma City FC (0-0-0).
