ALEXANDRIA, VA — The Alexandria Reds concluded its summer WPSL campaign on Saturday, falling 4-1 in a hard-fought battle against Arlington SA U21. Despite the challenging result in the season finale, the match marked the end of a milestone season for the Reds, which ultimately secured its highest finish in the WPSL division standings in program history.

The match opened physically. Arlington controlled the early tempo, generating early chances. However, the Alexandria defense held firm and absorbed the pressure. By the 20-minute mark, the Reds established a resolute defensive block, patiently waiting to strike on the counterattack. The midfield evolved into a gritty battleground with heavy tackling as both sides fought for possession. Alexandria began carving out chances, highlighted by a dangerous long-range effort from Reese Waterhouse. Despite promising combinations, the first half concluded in a 0-0 deadlock.

Momentum shifted drastically seconds into the second half. In the 46th minute, Arlington capitalized on a midfield combination, launching a long-range shot that beat the Alexandria goalkeeper to break the deadlock. Arlington doubled their advantage in the 54th minute, executing a cross to the back post that was headed back across the goal to make it 2-0.

Undeterred, the Reds pushed fiercely to cut the deficit. Alexandria engineered dangerous combinations down the wings, consistently delivering crosses and through balls into the final third. In the 73rd minute, the Reds orchestrated a brilliant attacking sequence through the Arlington defense, only to see the final shot miss narrowly wide.

Alexandria continued knocking on the door with another fantastic break down the right side in the 80th minute, but successive shots were desperately blocked. Despite their relentless attacking pressure, the elusive finishing touch remained just out of reach.

The final moments brought a sudden flurry of action. In the 87th minute, a deflected effort snuck in to extend Arlington’s lead to 3-0. Alexandria instantly responded in the 88th minute when Allison Gardner brilliantly intercepted a loose pass, burst through on a breakaway, and slotted an excellent finish past the keeper to put the Reds on the board. Arlington then added a final tally moments later with a one-time finish off a cross from the right flank, sealing the 4-1 result.

Following the final whistle, the head coach Christy Monroy Bravo reflected on the squad's performance and the broader significance of their summer campaign.

"Physical effort and fight was great from the whole team," Monroy Bravo noted. "I think we could have been better in our mental execution today, but the effort was certainly there."

Looking past the result, the staff emphasized the monumental steps the program took this year.

"For this group, I am most proud of their growth this season and for many of them the trend of growth across recent years," she added.

"Some women have been with ASA since youth, some with WPSL for the last two to three years, and this will be our highest finish on the WPSL division table in our years participating, which speaks to their commitment and growth within the program."

Though the match schedule has concluded, the work continues for the squad.

"Keep training and see you soon!" Monroy Bravo said. "For most players, this program is about development in their off-season. We still have a few more weeks of training and lots of development still to come. I hope they all took a lot out of the training and competition format we provided and will see those benefits in their fall performance."
