WASHINGTON D.C. — The Alexandria Reds kicked off a doubleheader weekend with a 3-2 road victory over District Elite FC in blistering heat on Saturday. The Reds bolstered their second-place position in the WPSL standings, showcasing the squad's attacking flair and defensive resilience.

Despite the sweltering conditions, the Reds wasted no time asserting themselves. Just six minutes into the match, Samantha James broke the deadlock. Making a penetrating run down the right wing, James drove into the box and clinically slotted the ball low and hard into the bottom left corner for an early 1-0 lead.

Following the opening goal, District Elite began searching for balls in behind the defense. The Reds’ backline remained resolute, absorbing the pressure and looking to exploit spaces on the counter-attack. In the 16th minute, Alexandria threatened again with a dangerous cutback and shot from the left side, proving their potency in transition.

The hosts found their equalizer in the 40th minute. A combination down the right flank played the District Elite attacker through on goal, who fired a shot into the bottom left corner to level the score at 1-1.

However, the Reds snatched the momentum right back before the halftime whistle. In the 43rd minute, Olivia Cruz unleashed a powerful shot that forced a parry from the District Elite goalkeeper. On the ensuing corner kick, Isabella Yousefi rose above the defense to smash a downward header that bounced past the keeper, sending Alexandria into the break with a 2-1 advantage.

Alexandria came out strong in the second half. After goalkeeper Molly Brunk made a crucial save on a long-range effort in the 47th minute to preserve the lead, the Reds executed their third goal in the 50th minute.

Cruz sparked the sequence with sharp combination play in the midfield to create space. She then delivered a perfectly weighted lobbed pass to a sprinting Gabriella Terrell on the far side. Terrell took a brilliant touch in stride, rounded the rushing goalkeeper on a breakaway, and calmly passed the ball into the empty net to extend the lead to 3-1.

As the game became stretched, both teams traded chances. District Elite found a lifeline in the 87th minute. A cross from the right side found a striker in the box, who finished to make it a tense 3-2 game. Despite a nail-biting near-equalizer from the hosts in the 89th minute, the Reds held their nerve to see out the victory.

Head Coach Christy Monroy Bravo commended the squad's resilience and adaptability, particularly as the team deployed a new tactical setup.

"The effort was awesome today," the coach said. "Temperatures were very hot today and it was our first of two matches this weekend. Everyone on the team stepped up to contribute a healthy distribution of minutes, including some first-time rosterees. We played a new shape today based on player availability and I thought the girls did an excellent job figuring out new spaces to take advantage of as the game progressed and solving problems together live on the pitch."

Monroy Bravo noted that halftime adjustments focused on applying higher pressure to disrupt District Elite’s build-up play, which paid dividends before the chaotic final minutes.

"The last few minutes they made it very stressful for us," Monroy Bravo added. "Their attacking players are very threatening and our backline had to put in a lot of minutes today, so it was a challenge for sure. I applaud our girls for locking in, helping support each other, and managing to keep the ball in higher spaces whenever possible."

The Reds have a quick turnaround to complete their weekend doubleheader as they return home to host The St. James FC on Sunday, June 21, at Limerick Field.
