KANSAS CITY CURRENT II RETURNS TO COMPETITIVE PLAY IN 2026 WPSL SEASON

Becomes second NWSL club to field its second team in WPSL

OKLAHOMA CITY (February 19, 2026) — The Women’s Premier Soccer League announces the return of the Kansas City Current II to WPSL play for the 2026 season. The announcement makes Kansas City Current II the second NWSL team to feature a second team in the WPSL for 2026 alongside Portland Thorns FC.

“This league provides a fantastic opportunity for our players to gain valuable, high-level match experience while continuing their development within the Kansas City Current pathway,” Vasil Ristov, Kansas City Current II head coach, said.

The 2026 WPSL season will be the Kansas City Current II’s second season in full WPSL competition. In 2022, the Current II went 10-0-1, including a perfect 8-0-0 Heartland Division campaign. The Current II went on to top FC Milwaukee Torrent 7-0 in the Midwest Conference Championship match to advance to the Central Region Playoffs in Denver, advancing to the Central Region final with a 6-1 win over Indios Denver FC before falling to the Colorado Rapids Women 3-2. In the interim, the club played a limited exhibition schedule going 2-2-3 in 2025: 2-1-0 versus WPSL sides.

Kansas City Current II’s headlong jump back into WPSL competition begins with the kickoff of Heartland Division play, and will include matches versus last year’s Heartland Division and Midwest Conference winners, Oklahoma City FC, along with FC Wichita, Side FC 92 Tulsa, Sunflower State Football Club, and Union KC.

“We’re thrilled to be back competing in the WPSL,” Ristov said. Our focus is on building a strong, competitive culture where every player can grow technically, tactically, and mentally. We’re excited for the season ahead and can’t wait to showcase the commitment and progress of this group.

The 28 th WPSL season kicks off May 4, culminating with the WPSL Championships July 17-19. The full 2026 WPSL schedule will be announced March 17.
