RIVERSIDE, Mo. (June 25, 2026) — Valeria Romero unleased a left-footed strike into the back of the net from 25 yards in the 86th minute, lifting Oklahoma City FC to a dramatic 2-1 road victory over Heartland Division leader Kansas City Current II on Wednesday night at Riverside Stadium and keeping the ScissorTails alive in the three-team race for the division title.

The goal was the first WPSL tally for Romero, an incoming senior midfielder at Santa Fe South High School in Oklahoma City.  Romero has flourished this season with the Oklahoma City FC Reserves, scoring five goals in her last WPSL Division II appearances.  Her strong play at the Division II level has earned her minutes off the bench in six WPSL matches this season.

The victory snapped Oklahoma City FC’s club-record three-match losing streak and improved the ScissorTails to 6-3-0.  It now sit two points behind both Kansas City Current II and Union KC, which are tied atop the standings at 6-2-1.

The Heartland Division race comes down to the final weekend of the regular season.  Oklahoma City FC hosts Union KC on Saturday at 7 p.m., while the Kansas City Current II travels to FC Wichita for a 7 p.m. kickoff Sunday.

Kansas City Current II struck first just four minutes into the match.  Avery Clark collected a feed from Khari Hontz and slipped a shot past diving Oklahoma City FC goalkeeper Callie Sullivan inside the left post for a 1-0 advantage.  The goal was Clark’s team-high seventh of the season and third in two meetings against the ScissorTails.

Oklahoma City FC responded almost immediately.

Just three minutes later, defender Landri Allee pounced on a rebound off the post and buried it from close range to tie the match at 1-1.  The goal ended the club’s 281-minute scoreless drought, which spanned five matches, and marked Allee’s first goal in an Oklahoma City FC uniform.

The Current controlled much of the second half, repeatedly testing Oklahoma City FC’s back line while generating 12 corner kicks over the final 50 minutes.

Sullivan helped keep the match level with a series of key saves, commanding the 18-yard penalty area throughout the evening.  Her most notable stop came in the 89th minute when she leaped to her left to deflect a dangerous Kansas City Current II opportunity and preserve OKC’s lead.

The Current threatened one final time in the fourth minute of stoppage time.  Following a floating corner kick, Skylar Blaise gathered a loose ball just four yards from goal and fired toward the net, but Oklahoma City FC defender Kiki Smith was perfectly positioned on the goal line to block the attempt and seal the come-from-behind victory.
