PENSACOLA SURVIVES PENALTIES TO EARN SPOT IN REGIONAL FINAL

WOODSTOCK, Ga. — Two-time WPSL champions Pensacola FC advanced to the South Region Final for the first time since its 2019 league championship run topping Atlantic Conference winners Arlington SA 4-2 in penalty kicks after playing to a 2-2 draw after extra time.

The game was delayed more than three hours due to severe weather in the area.

Alden Marin put Arlington SA 10 minutes into the second half to give Arlington a short-lived lead, Fernanda Mayrink equalized in stoppage time after two goals from Pensacola’s Ayla Ertekin.

Mayrink started the game in goal for Arlington SA before moving to the outfield for the second half.

Bela Labovic, Katja May, Lainey Farbough, Rainey Toulson converted from the spot for Pensacola, and goalkeeper Karla Guzman-Ortiz made one save in the tiebreaker to put Pensacola through to the South Region Playoff final on Sunday in Woodstock, Ga.

Mayrink and Rebecca Sherry converted from the spot for Arlington SA.

With the win, Pensacola moves to 9-2-0 on the season, and will face Southeast Conference champs Georgia Impact in the South Region Final on Sunday in Woodstock, Ga. Kickoff is at 4 p.m. EDT.

Arlington SA closed out its season 7-2-1.
