Oklahoma City, OKLAHOMA – Week Five of the NWSL Fall Series had an extra match due to the rescheduling of the Portland Thorns versus OL Reign as a result of the fires on the west coast. This meant an extra opportunity to see WPSL alumnae take the field.
In total, 40 alumnae earned playing time across the four matches played with 28 former players making the starting lineup – another increase in previous weeks, with 15 playing the full 90’ and 12 coming in from the bench.
Another notable feat is 21 of these former players played in the last four WPSL seasons and 15 were selected in the last four NWSL College Drafts with six being selected in the first rounds.
Bethany Balcer (Seattle Sounders Women, ’18) scored a header on a cross into the box assisted by Shirley Cruz in the 70th minute for OL Reign in their 4-1 loss against Portland Thorns FC. Jasmyne Spencer (New York Fury, ’12), with six shots (three SOG) on the night, played a dominate force up front despite the disappointing result.
In a similar fashion, Ryan Williams (Oak City United, ’18) sent a ball into the box from outside the 18 that resulted in a Lynn Williams goal to put North Carolina Courage on the board in the 74’. Sinclaire Miramontez (Kansas City Athletics, ’18) also made her debut for North Carolina however Houston Dash would take the win with the final score 4-1.
Twenty-one former and current clubs were represented this week with an impressive eight alumnae from clubs represented from the WPSL Elite league in 2012.
