TORRANCE, California – Salsa Women SC has joined the Women’s Premier Soccer League as an expansion club, adding to the league’s strong presence in Los Angeles County, the league announced Friday.
The club will play its home matches at Zamperini Stadium in Torrance, California. The club is offering free attendance to its 2019 home matches and has already partnered with four local sponsors.
Aaron Rodriguez is Salsa Women SC’s coach and technical director with Ben Meeks and Elmer Rosales as his assistants. Wendy Christensen is the club general manager.
“We are excited about this amazing opportunity,” Rodriguez said. “Our team’s recent achievements at Cal South Adult State Cup and our trip to Gibraltar to play against Everton Ladies, Atletico Madrid and Paris FC confirms that we should be playing at a higher level. The WPSL offers that.
“This team has a strong core of Division I and Division II collegiate players locally and nationally as well as some of the best local city players. Although our team is young, we are very hungry to perform in the WPSL.”
Salsa Women SC join CAFC Ospreys (Frederica, Delaware), EGA Omaha, Alamo City SC (San Antonio), Wake FC (Raleigh, North Carolina), ASC San Diego, EPIC Sport Management (Victoria, British Columbia), Indios Denver FC, FC Arizona Women (Mesa, Arizona), Charlotte Eagles, Utah Royals FC Reserves and Orlando Kicks FC as announced 2019 expansion clubs.
The WPSL is in its 22nd season and is the largest women’s soccer league in the world with more than 100 clubs from coast-to-coast. WPSL rosters feature elite collegiate, post-collegiate, international and standout prep student-athletes. Many of the United States’ most accomplished women’s players have played in the WPSL, including household names such as Alex Morgan, Abby Wambach, Megan Rapinoe, Julie Foudy and Brandi Chastain.
